A group of lawyers of the Allahabad High Court, who had been on a fast unto death since last week to press their demand for removal of District Magistrate and district police chief over the issue of recent killing of an advocate, today called off their hunger strike.
"The lawyers, led by HCBA (High Court Bar Association) secretary Rajiv Shukla, ended their 'amaran anshan' (fast unto death) by accepting juice from Justice Pankaj Mittal who had visited the Ambedkar Chauraha following our request", HCBA President Rakesh Pande and Honarary Secretary C P Upadhyay said in a statement.
The protesting lawyers were told that the HCBA would make all efforts to ensure that the DM and the SSP, whose laxity allowed the policeman to flee from the spot after opening fire, are brought to book, they said.
The 30-year-old advocate Nabi Ahmed was shot dead allegedly by sub-inspector of police Shailendra Kumar Singh who, upon his arrest two days after the killing, said that he had fired in self-defence after being attacked and abused by a group of lawyers at the court premises where he had gone to depose in connection with a case.
