Housewife tortured by husband as part of religious ritual

A mother of four, was seriously injured after her husband allegedly tortured her in the name of performing 'Kshudra Puja', supposedly to get rid of their daughter's "mental" illness.
The victim, Ramanujamma, was allegedly severely beaten up by her husband, Chandrayadu, during the ritual last night in Kothapalli village within Puttaparthy rural police station limits of the district, said DSP of Dharmavaram (Sub-Division) Venugopal.
"The couple had four daughters of which one is said to be mentally ill. Chandrayadu planned to conduct a Kshudra Puja under a belief that she would be rid off her mental illness and become normal. During the ritual, he severely beat up his wife," the police official said.

"She was seriously injured and shifted to a hospital in Dharmavaram. The police received information about the incident and efforts are on to nab Chandrayadu," he said.
A case has been booked on charges of attempt to murder and voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, while a probe is on into the incident, he said.
