80-year-old Verma breathed his last on April 22 at a Gurgaon hospital.
A full court reference was made in HP High Court here today to mourn the demise of Verma, who had recently headed a panel on improving women's security after the Delhi gang-rape.
Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of Verma and hailed him as the judiciary's "conscience keeper".
The reference was also addressed by the Advocate General Shravan Dogra, Chairman of Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh, Rajinder Dogra and president of HP High Court Bar Association Sandeep Sharma.
Born on January 18, 1933, Verma began his legal career in 1955, and was appointed as a Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court in June 1973.
In June, 1989, he was appointed as Judge of Supreme Court and became Chief Justice of India in January, 1998. He also remained Chairman of National Human rights Commission from November 4, 1999 to January 17, 2003.
