HP Sports Act 2005 may be enacted again: CM

Himachal Pradesh government is mulling re-enactment of HP Sports (Registration, Recognition and Regulations of Associations) Act 2005, which had been repealed by the previous BJP government, to regulate the sports bodies, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said today.
The Act was challenged by Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in the court, pleading that it (HPCA) did not come under the purview of the Act.
The case was pending in the court when the BJP government repealed the Act after coming to power.
Virbhadra rubbished the charge of HPCA President Anurag Thakur that the government's act was political vendetta against him.
"There is no political vendetta at all and FIRs have been registered after initial probe by Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau and all these charges were included in the charge-sheet submitted by the Congress (while in opposition) to President of India in August 2012," he said.

"The functioning of the sports bodies should be totally transparent and elections to these bodies should be held in a proper manner and some representatives of government should also be included in these bodies and elections cannot be personal affair," he said.
The Chief Minister said that "a lot of problems, plaguing the cricket body (HPCA), could have been avoided had the Sports Act been in place and the alleged irregularities committed by the HPCA would not have been allowed to happen".
