With aspirations to take modern farming techniques to farmers across the country, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is urging the Centre and the Planning Commission for an exclusive television channel for airing agricultural-related programmes.
"We have been urging for an agriculture TV. They ask whether there was enough content and who would watch the channel. There are over 65 crore farmers in the country and if each of them are given 10 minutes, we have enough content for long," ICAR Director General S Ayyappan said.
While funds upto Rs 300 crore were necessary for establishing such a channel, for a country of this size and keeping in mind the benefits the farmers would get, the government could give its nod, he said.
The top official gave a key note address on 'Take it to the Farmer' as part of Norman Borlaug Birth Centenary Dialogue, being organised by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation here between March 13 and 15.
