Indonesia's Ambassador to India Sidharto Suryodipuro has stressed on re-establishing ancient educational links between the two countries.

Indonesia had harboured long standing ties with Indian universities of the past such as Nalanda, and "we now need to utilise proximity with each other to re-establish those natural links", he said.

Suryodipuro said he visited the Rabindra Bharati University here and talked to its authorities about establishing linkages between Indonesian educational institutions and those of India.

The envoy also visited 'Thakurbari', the ancestral home and birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore at Jorasanko in north Kolkata yesterday. One of the two RBU campuses is located at Jorasanko.

"It is a humbling experience to see the place of birth of a great man, great poet, great artiste like Tagore which is also the place of his final journey," he said about the visit.

Tagore had visited Java and Bali in 1927 and he wrote about the experiences of this travel, he said.

Asked about possibility of Indonesian tourists visiting Jorasanko, Suryodipuro said "There is a wide range of tourists from our country and among them, a certain segment look for visiting such places of knowledge."
