With this incident, the total number of suicides have risen to eight within three months in the modern jail, according to the authorities.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a resident of Jalandhar, hanged with the grill of a toilet with the help of a cloth in a barrack, Jail Superintendent Paramjit Singh Sandhu said.
The deceased was brought to the jail after being booked under the NDPS Act two months ago, he added.
Sandhu further said that the deceased was not a drug addict as per the reports of jail inmates and civil hospital doctors who had conducted the post mortem, but he was mentally depressed after his arrest in the case.
Sandhu said that the family is so poor that jail officials have to arrange a vehicle to carry his body to Jalandhar for the last rites and also gave Rs 1500 for his cremation.
The family was running their livelihood on begging after the arrest of deceased under the NDPS Act, according to jail official.
