Most of the cars were stolen from Delhi and later sold in the markets of Punjab after preparing fake documents of the vehicles, Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh told reporters here today.
After stealing the premium category cars they managed to prepare fake documents allegedly with the help of a District Transport official, Amritpal Singh, who was posted as a clerk here, he said.
Aulakh said that Amritpal, who was also arrested, used to prepare fake documents of stolen vehicles.
Aulakh also said that the accused even managed to get financed new luxury vehicles from banks on the basis of fake addresses by submitting fake documents.
Once the vehicle was financed by the bank and the accused had taken its delivery, they used to sell the financed vehicle to other cities.
"By doing so they were also committing fraud with the banking institutions as well as also deceiving the innocent people by selling them vehicles with fake documents," he said.
