The head of Italy's anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), which co-governs the country, stepped down as party leader Wednesday in a move that could trigger political shockwaves.
M5S is the largest party in Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's coalition government, and Luigi Di Maio's exit could further weaken an already fragile alliance with the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
"Today I'm here to hand in my resignation as head of the Five Star Movement," Di Maio, 33, told a meeting of party members on Wednesday.
In a nearly hour-long speech for which he received a standing ovation, he called the party a "visionary project that has never been seen before."
