Director, Sher-i-Kashmir Police Academy in Udhampur, Rajesh Kumar Yadav, who was the chief guest on the occasion, flagged off the first ever mounted squad of District Police in Udhampur, a police officer said.
"Police is initially going to deploy Mounted Police Squad in Udhampur town and the scheme, if succeeded, would be implemented in other busy towns, hilly areas and the areas where the vehicular movement is not practically possible," he said.
He said unlike traditional policing practices, the mounted squad will perform its crime control and law and order duties.
In future, similar mounted police squads would be deployed for specialised duties ranging from mela duties, free style wrestling events, patrol of parks and wilderness, he said.
Meanwhile, a ticketing system to check and control wrong parking was also launched by Udhampur Police which is going to be made operational from November 25.
This is a joint effort by District Police Udhampur, District Administration Udhampur and Sher-i-Kashmir Police Academy Udhampur for a crime free society, the officer added.
