The Tihar Jail Superintendent has been directed by a Delhi court to explore the possibility of allowing a man, who has been awarded life term for the death of his pregnant wife, to serve orphans, special children and donate his organs while serving the sentence.
The court's directions to the Jail Superintendent came while considering the written request of 33-year-old convict Mukesh Kumar Chauhan that he desired to donate his blood and organs, including eyes and kidneys, and to engage himself in community service while serving his punishment.
"I have considered the request/prayer of the convict which I am forwarding to the Superintendent of Jail with directions to explore the possibility and feasibility of the convict serving the orphans and special children, blood donation and organs donation during the period of his undergoing the sentence," Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau said.
While deciding the case, the court rejected Chauhan's own confession that he killed both his six-year-old mentally challenged son and eight-month pregnant wife. The court held him guilty for causing the death of his wife only.
The court diluted the charge of murder and held Chauhan guilty of causing death of his wife with intention and awarded him life imprisonment and imposed Rs 2,000 fine.
As per the police, Chauhan murdered his wife and child in July 2014 in a state of desperation and he then attempted to commit suicide by coming in front of a train but was saved.
During the proceedings, Chauhan had told the court that his pregnant wife had become highly irritable and was unable to manage the affairs of the disabled child who was growing up and was totally dependent on his parents.
On July 16, 2014, when he went to washroom, his wife strangulated the child and smothered him with electric iron's wire and he found the boy lying on the ground, he had said.
On enquiry, his wife told him that she killed the child and he noticed that his wife had put the same wire around her neck and was trying to strangulate herself, he said adding that he lost balance of mind and in the process, his wife was strangulated and smothered to death.
