Jamia Millia Islamia university has received a grant of Rs 3.5 crore from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to start skill development programmes in Medical Lab Technology and Medical Electrophysiology.
The grant will be utilised for setting up Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centres for Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (DDU-KAUSHAL) at the varsity which will offer these courses.
The idea of 100 centres for Knowledge Upgradation for Skilled Human Action and Learning (KUSHAL) in universities and colleges was mooted by HRD minister Smriti Irani in September last year during the retreat of vice-chancellors.
The scheme was however renamed as DDU-KAUSHAL by the commission in December last year.
UGC had received proposals from 708 higher education institutions across the country for setting up this centre.
After scrutiny, the UGC shortlisted 65 institutions for the purpose. Out of these, 48 colleges and universities will get funds from the UGC.
Jamia is the only institution from Delhi to receive the grant and approval to set up the centre.
Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodya Vidyalya in Madhya Pradesh has got the maximum grant of Rs 4.90 crore to offer courses in food processing, agricultural operations, renewable energy and building technology.
