A top Trinamool Congress leader today dismissed former Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly's contention that no dissent is allowed in West Bengal and that the government did not like his continuance as chief of the state human rights panel.
"This is not true. This is his personal opinion and not the opinion of the majority of the people. That is his subjective view," TMC Lok Sabha member Saugata Roy told PTI here.
"Justice Ganguly has charged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was biased against him. This is not true at all because she was instrumental in making him the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission," he said.
"She has never complained about Justice Ganguly to any authority. She sent a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee asking for his removal (as WBHRC chief) only after the Supreme Court committee disclosed its findings," Roy said.
"Logically, the chief minister must have felt that the judge against whom there was such an allegation, will not be able to do justice to his position as WBHRC chairman," he said referring to the charge of alleged sexual harassment of a law intern.
Roy, however, welcomed the resignation of Justice Ganguly.
Earlier in the day, Ganguly said that the West Bengal government "never liked my continuance as chairman of state human rights commission. No dissent is allowed in Bengal. This is well-known to everyone".
Asked whether he felt there was a political conspiracy against him, Justice Ganguly replied, "I can't say whether it is a political conspiracy.
