Ardhendhu Shekhar Paul, TMC ward committee convenor, was returning from party office to his home at Kalyani Mitra Colony when the assailants fired two rounds at him last night, injuring him.
He was rushed to a local hospital and according to the hospital authorities his condition was stable.
Allegedly in retaliation, a mob ransacked the house of local TMC councilor Amar Roy suspecting him to be behind the attack, SP, Nadia, Shees Ram Jhajharia said.
"We got a complaint from injured Ardhendhu Shekhar Paul and registered a case with IPC 326, 370 and Arms Act. Investigation is going on and the culprits will be arrested soon," the SP said.
