The Madras High Court today directed the authorities concerned to keep in mind its August 25 order on regulating slaughtering of camels as well as food safety and standards regulations to prevent illegal killing.
When the petition, filed by one Radha Rajan seeking to direct the authorities to ensure no camel slaughter takes place in Tamil Nadu, came up, the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam, said they had already issued appropriate directions in the main matter.
The authorites concerned had assured it that the law would be followed and steps were already being taken to prevent illegal camel import, the bench said.
The HC pointed out that the petitioner was a part of the committee itself. Thus, all the pleas sought to be raised would also have to be dealt with by the committee.
"This petition is primarily oriented towards celebration of Eid tomorrow, which is Bakrid. We leave it open to the petitioner to raise all issues in the committee and we would examine the issue in the main matters," the bench said.
The bench, which heard the petitions filed by Radha Rajan and Tamil Nadu Thowhead Jamat, had earlier appointed a committee in which Chief Kazi of Tamil Nadu government Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub was a part of, to suggest rules on the slaughter.
The commitee comprises officials of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Department, Road Transport, Chennai Corporation, TNPCB , Animal Welafre Board of India, Food Safety and Standard Authority of India, and also R. Srinivas, counsel for the petitioner, to regulate camel slaughter as per norms.
