Police personnel managed to catch an alleged kingpin of a Mewat-based gang of autolifters from Kirti Nagar in west Delhi despite being attacked and fired upon, a police official said today.
The accused, Dilshad, was caught by the patrolling party of Kriti Nagar Police Station on the intervening night of April 25 and 26, said DCP (west) Vijay Kumar.
Head constable Vijay and constable Sandeep were patrolling Kirti Nagar industrial area on the night of April 25. Around 12.30 PM, they stopped a car and tried to conduct a search, which led to a scuffle with the occupants of the vehicle, he said.
During the scuffle, Dilshad allegedly fired at constable Sandeep but missed narrowly and also bit the index finger of head constable Vijay, the officer said.
The four associates of Dilshad, including Salman, also attacked the two policemen and later fled after people started gathering on the spot, the DCP said.
The two policemen overpowered Dilshad and tied him to a tree. In a desperate bid to escape, the accused hurt himself by banging his head on the tree trunk, he said.
A countrymade pistol, four live and one fired cartridges, a car, two mobile phones and master keys for unlocking doors of vehicles have been recovered from them, the police officer said.
During interrogation, Dilshad confessed that the gang used to enter Delhi from Gurgaon border using commercial numbered cars. They used to carry tools and weapons to steal high-end cars and trucks in different parts of the city, the DCP said.
