At least nine security men, including an ASP, and 38 protestors were injured when they clashed in Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's constituency Titabor today.
Over 4000 Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) protestors assembled in front of Titabor Sub-Divisional Officer's (SDO) office to submit a memorandum on an alleged scam in the Rs 100-crore Greater Titabar Water Supply Scheme, official sources said.
When SDO Roshni Oporonti Korette allegedly refused to come out to receive the memorandum, KMSS demonstrators tried to forcibly enter the compound of the office, the sources said.
The irate mob then threw stones at the security men injuring Jorhat district Additional Superintendent of Police Sushanta Dutta, five police men and three CRPF jawans, they said.
Five vehicles, including that of a PTI correspondent, and five motor cycles parked in the area were damaged in the pelting of stones.
When the protestors continued with their attacks after imposition of Section 144 Cr P C in the area, police resorted to lathicharge, bursting of tear gas shells and blank firing to disperse the agitationists.
In the lathicharge 38 picketeers were injured, the sources said, adding, KMSS general secretary and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi was arrested.
Demanding Gogoi's release, his supporters blocked for three hours the Dhudor Ali connecting Titabor with Dimapur in Nagaland through NH-39, they said.
The agitationists withdrew their blockade after Gogoi was released.
