While the Law Ministry was provided Rs 381.33 crore last fiscal for 'elections', this time it has been granted Rs 1555.40 crore. The statement says that the "provision is for meeting carry forward liability in respect of charges for conduct of General Lok Sabha Elections."
The Legislative Department in the Law Ministry is the administrative department for the Election Commission. The election-related expenditure are settled between the Law Ministry and the Home Ministry through 'book adjustments'.
The Ministry has also been provided Rs 212.29 crore for the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms.
The programme is aimed to ensure a well coordinated response of the executive and the judiciary for speeding up delivery of justice in the country and reduce the delay in the disposal of cases by the courts.
