The deceased has been identified as M M Khan, an assistant legal advisor with the NDMC. A case of murder has been registered in connection with the incident, which is suspected to be the fall-out of a personal rivalry, a senior police official said.
The incident took place around 7.45 PM when Khan was heading back home in his car which was intercepted by a motorbike at a busy street in Jamia Nagar. The assailants on the bike were wearing helmets and shot at Khan from quite a close range.
Khan's relatives told police that he had been receiving calls from unknown people during odd hours of the day. Police have recovered his mobile phone and the call data will be analysed, the official said.
His body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Khan was working as an assistant legal advisor with the NDMC for more than five years.
