'Independence Day' director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin are working on a sequel that will arrive in cinemas for the franchise's 20th anniversary in 2016.
Hemsworth, 25, has currently received a formal offer for the male lead of 'Independence Day 2', reported The Wrap.
Production company 20th Century Fox has offered no comment on Hemsworth's involvement with the science fiction sequel.
Rumours of the actor's imminent casting comes amid continuing reports that Michael B Jordan is being considered for another role.
Jeff Goldblum previously revealed that he has been approached to reprise his role as computer expert David Levinson, who helped repel an alien invasion in the 1996 original movie.
The original movie made more than USD 800 million at the worldwide box office.
