The Maharashtra Assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to add "Maharaj" to the international airport and railway terminus in Mumbai, already named after Maratha warrior king Chatrapati Shivaji.
The resolution seeks to rename the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport as "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport" and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station as "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus".
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis moved the resolution in the Assembly saying the house recommends the Central Government to rename the two facilities.
He also moved another resolution urging the Centre to change the name of Elphinstone Road Railway station in Mumbai to Prabhadevi.
Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil seconded the resolutions.
The entire house welcomed both the resolutions by thumping desks, with some members from the treasury benches raising chanting "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki jai".
The sprawling railway terminus, a marvellous structure and UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in 1887 in Bori Bunder area of Bombay (now Mumbai) to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and had for over a century been known as Victoria Terminus before it was renamed after Shivaji in 1996, months after Bombay was renamed as Mumbai.
The Sahar airport in the Western suburbs was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in 1999.
Later, domestic airport at Vile Parle also came to be known as Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
