A delegation of Mahila Congress workers today met former prime minister Manmohan Singh expressing solidarity with him, over being summoned as accused in a coal scam case, a day after the entire top leadership of the party closed ranks behind him.
Singh, and his wife Gursharan Kaur, greeted and thanked the delegation, led by Mahila Congress national president Shobha Oza, and said that he will "fight it out".
Several national executive members of the party's womens' wing and a number of its state presidents were also present in the meeting that lasted for around 15 minutes.
"We had come to extend our full support and solidarity with him whose honesty and integrity is beyond any question. We told him that we are with him in his fight against injustice," Oza told reporters.
Denouncing the way "attempts" were being made to "harm" his image, she said the whole country and the world respected Singh. "He is a man of integrity and clean image and people respect the way he led the country for the last 10 years."
Yesterday, Congress leaders led by party president Sonia Gandhi took out a march to Singh's house and said the party would fight the case with all legal means at its command.
A special court had summoned Singh along with industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, ex-coal secretary P C Parakh and three others as accused in a case pertaining to allocation of Talabira-II coal block in Odisha in 2005 and asked them to appear before it on April 8.
