A 58-year-old Gujarat-based businessman was hospitalised here today after he allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming insecticide in front of the Finance Ministry in North Block, police said.
The businessman hailing from Porbandar in Gujarat, was accompanied by his 65-year-old friend while on a tour of the city when the incident occurred, police said.
The reason for the suicide bid is yet to be ascertained, a police officer said.
The man and his friend had arrived in Delhi on September 19 and they had gone to North Block area where he asked the latter to fetch an auto and meanwhile consumed some insecticide from a bottle this afternoon, the officer said.
"The incident took place between Gate numbers 2 and 3 of North Block where the businessman tried to commit suicide by consuming the insecticide from a bottle," Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Jatin Narwal said.
He was immediately rushed to RML hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger, the DCP said.
"We questioned his friend about the step taken by him but he expressed his helplessness to give any reason for the suicide attempt. He said that he left his friend for a few moments but found him unconscious upon returning," Narwal said.
The businessman was admitted to the hospital and is yet to be questioned regarding his suicide bid, he added.
