Shraban Kumar entered his neighbour's house near railway gate number 8 and attempted to rape the seven-year-old girl, the sources said.
Hearing the girl's cries, neighbours entered the house and caught Shraban and handed him over to police.
An FIR has been filed by the girl's father in Bharalumukh police station.
