A 53-year-old man allegedly
hacked his son to death on Sunday night following a fight that broke out between them over the latter's drinking habits.
According to police, the accused, a tailor by profession, was arrested soon after the crime and the weapon used in the alleged offence, a billhook, was recovered from the spot.
Police said the victim Munawwar lived in south Delhi's Sangam Vihar with his parents, brother, wife and two children, adding that initial probe has shown that Munawwar was an alcoholic and used to often fight with his family.
"The rebuke came from his father and wife whenever he returned home from work in an inebriated state. Munawwar would fight with them each time and even indulged in physical violence sometimes," said a police officer.
According to police, his wife moved to her parental home with her children a few weeks ago when she could not tolerate his behaviour any longer and ended up indulging in an ugly fight with him.
The victim did not change his habit and returned home drunk at 9.45 pm on Sunday night too.
His father Mohammad Ismail scolded him as soon as Munawwar reached home from the embroidery shop in the area where he worked, that led to an argument which soon turned into a scuffle between the father and the son.
"In a fit of rage, Ismail picked up a billhook lying in a corner of the room and attacked his son on the neck.
Munawwar immediately collapsed on the floor but his father continued to hit him a few more times," said a senior police official.
By the time police were informed, Ismail had fled the home. He was nabbed soon from the area.
The victim was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
