The Cyberabad Police today arrested a man, who worked as a data entry operator with the B R Ambedkar Open University here, for allegedly siphoning off over Rs 44 lakh by "inflating" his salary.
The accused, identified as Y V Rajeshwar Rao, who worked in the Accounts section of the varsity, was arrested after a complaint was lodged by the varsity's Registrar, said DCP (Madhapur Zone) P Vishwa Prasad.
Rao allegedly "manipulated" the grand total salary bill amount during preparation of salary bills and "inflated" his salary amount, the officer said quoting the complaint.
"The accused then fraudulently transferred the excess drawn salary into his wife's bank account illegally, while he was sending the documents to banks for crediting salaries to the accounts of about 500 employees of the varsity," the DCP said.
A case was registered against Rao under sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC.
"Rao stated that he had manipulated the amount with the help of his colleague L S Chowhan, a Junior Assistant in the Accounts section, and inflated the salary amount over a period of the two years to the tune of Rs 44.22 lakh," the officer said.
The accused allegedly siphoned off the amount to his and his wife's accounts besides also transferring Rs 71,000 into Chowhan's account, Prasad said, adding that Rao's wife and Chowhan are absconding.
