Ugam Singh also tried to kill his brother's wife and daughters but they escaped and approached police last night, a police official said.
Singh had a clash of interest with his step mother, Shanti Devi, and brother, Madan Singh, over the division of a piece of land.
Last night, Singh went to his mother's house to discuss the matter and soon entered into a heated argument, the police official said.
"In a fit of rage, he attacked Shanti Devi with an axe killing her on the spot. When his brother, Madan Singh, came to her rescue, he was also attacked and killed," he said.
Later, villagers and relatives of the deceased reached the spot and found the body of Ugam in a water tank of the house.
