MHC lambasts Thiruvallur Collector for not maintaining lake

The Madras High Court today lambasted Tiruvallur district administration for not maintaining the lake in Thirunindravur.
The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana while disposing a PIL by one T K Rajendran seeking to restrain local administration from opening the shutters of the lake in its order observed, "the aforesaid is only one example of how the land use area has been violated and the precautions for proper development, are given a go-bye."
The PIL sought a direction from the Court to restrain the authorities not to open the Shutters of the Thirunindravur lake as it will spoil the 1000 acres of cultivating land. The residents of Muthamizh Nagar, Periyar Nagar and Wadeshi Nagar at Thikruninravoor, who were facing floods.
"The lake with an area of 835 acres at Thiruninravoor village exists and water stored with the lake is sourced for cultivating more than 1000 acres of land", it said.
The total capacity of the lake/tank is 149 mcft and the stored capacity has reached to 139 mcft. The height of the bund of the lake is 12 feet and the water level is 11 feet. They submitted that unless the water is released, the lake itself is in danger, apart from the fact that it is difficult to take out the water which must find some path, it said.
