A polling official was killed and five others, including three security personnel were injured when militants attacked a polling party in Shopian district of south Kashmir today, police said.
Militants opened fire on the polling party when they were leaving the polling station at village Nagbal, about 65 kms from here, at the end of the voting exercise late this evening, they said.
A teacher, who was on poll duty, was killed and five others, including two policemen and a CRPF jawan, were injured in the attack, police said, adding security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to nab the militants who escaped in the face of the retaliation.
Immediately after the incident, people came out on the road and started pelting stone on the passing vehicles and blocked the road. Senior police officials have rushed to the spot.
No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
