Military engineer sentenced to jail in graft case

A local CBI court today convicted an Assistant Garrison Engineer of Military Engineering Services and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment for allegedly demanding bribe for settlement of a bill of a local supplier.
Special CBI judge V S Murkute convicted Eknath Barku Sonawane and also slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
Sonwane was sentenced to an additional two year imprisonment under another section of the Act, a CBI release said here.
The special judge also convicted Sonawane's colleague Mohan Hariharrao Joshi, a junior engineer and sentenced him to six months jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000.

CBI Nagpur branch had registered a case against Sonawane on the basis of a written complaint lodged by local electrical merchant Suraj Sharma alleging that he had demanded Rs 50,000 as bribe from him for clearing his pending bills in July, 2008.
Joshi was caught while accepting the bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant on behalf of Sonawane.
CBI had filed the charge sheet in February 2009.
Senior Public Prosecutor, CBI, Nagpur A H Khan had appeared on behalf of the prosecution under supervision of Sandeep Tamgadge, SP, CBI, ACB, Nagpur, it said.
