All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) today said the current mining ban in Goa may lead to unemployed people facing "psychological damage".
More than one lakh people have been left to fend for themselves due to closure of mining industry, AITUC Goa unit general secretary Christopher Fonseca told reporters here.
"More than one lakh people are unemployed and left with bleak future. People are nervous. It can create a kind of widespread psychological damage to the people in the state of Goa," Fonseca said.
"If we had any alternate economic activity, we could have said that the mining should be stopped," he said.
The mining activity in Goa had been suspended last year following a Supreme Court order.
The apex court had asked the Central Empowered Committee to probe the illegal mining in the state.
