Arjun Atwal's miserable form continued as he plummeted an eight-over 79 at the Congressional, a course that hosted the US Open last year.
Atwal had four bogeys, three doubles and just two birdies and was sure to miss the cut at 127th after first round.
Roberto Castro led the field with a round of five-under 66 on course yielded only about a dozen scores in the 60s and the average score was just over 73.
Bud Cauley, Billy Horschel and Graham Delaet shot 68 each to tie for second. Atwal has made just one cut in four previous starts on PGA Tour and made two other cuts in eight starts on Web.Com Tour.
