The mortal remains of Subedar Shashi Kumar Sharma, who was killed in Pakistani firing in the Naushehra sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, were consigned to flames in Galol village today.
His son lit the pyre in the presence of hundreds of people who had come to pay their last respects to the martyr.
A company of 9 Corps from Jalandhar gave a gun salute to the martyr at the crematorium.
Earlier, Sharma's body was brought to his native village by road as the Army could not airlift it due to inclement weather.
Sub-District Magistrate, Nadaun, Amit Mehra and local BJP MLA, Vijay Agnihotri were present at the time of cremation.
Former chief minister and senior BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal visited the house of the martyr and consoled the bereaved family.
The entire nation and the BJP stand by them, he said.
