The woman, identified as Subhashree Patnaik, jumped into the canal carrying her daughter at a place under Balianta police station area alongside the National Highway connecting Puri and Bhubaneswar, the police said.
While some local people bathing in the canal rescued the woman, there was no trace of the daughter. The injured woman was later rushed to the Capital Hospital here, while efforts were on by the fire brigade team to trace the child.
"When I woke up this morning, I found my wife and daughter not at home. I thought she might have taken the daughter to a nearby temple on the occasion of her birthday. But, as she did not turn up after a long time, I went out searching," Mohanty said.
The Police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.
