After Munger in Bihar, various border districts of Madhya Pradesh have emerged as a major source of sophisticated country-made weapons for dreaded gangs in Delhi and NCR.
In the last couple of months, the Special Cell and Crime Branch of Delhi Police have busted several gangs which were smuggling illegal weapons from Barwani, Dhar, Khandwa and Khargone districts of Madhya Pradesh and recovered arms which were very sophisticated in nature and in no way less than those build in state of the art ordinance factories.
According to senior police officials, criminals are now looking towards other options because security agencies have tightened their leash on the smuggling of illegal weapons from Munger which had become notorious for the illegal trade.
There were reports that weapons made in illegal factories on the outskirts of Munger had found their way even to terror groups.
"We all know that Munger has been a big hub of gunrunning but in recent times, good quality guns have also come from Khargone and Ratlam areas of Madhya Pradesh. We have been making concentrated efforts to check this menace," Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) S N Shrivastava told PTI.
An in-house study into the growing use of sophisticated firearms over last few years revealed that in most of the cases, illegal weapons used in commission of various crimes in Delhi, were manufactured and supplied from Barwani, Dhar and Khargone of Madhya Pradesh and later smuggled into Delhi and NCR.
"These weapons are built in factories which are situated inside forests, away from reach of any police patrolling. We are making efforts to curb these activities with the help of local police," said a senior police official.
