A 17th century artillery gun, possibly used by the Mughal army during its attack on the Golconda Fort here, has been found during the digging for construction in an plot of land here.
Officers of Commissioner's Task Force (East Zone) got a tip-off that the gun, weighing around 800 kg, had been found by the workers employed by a private contractor on a plot of land at Nayapool in Mirchowk, and took its possession today.
A senior police officer said the cannon was probably a part of the artillery accompanying the forces of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb when he attacked Golconda Fort and succeeded in the second attempt in 1687 by defeating the last Qutub Shahi ruler Abdul Hassan Tanisha.
The gun -- 6.5 feet long, having the bore diameter of 4 inches and made of alloys -- was a rare specimen and quite advanced by the standards of those times, said Deputy Commissioner of Police N Koti Reddy.
It would be handed over to the Department of Archaeology, Telangana.
