City police today registered an FIR against a Hyderabad-based man, who allegedly sent a hoax email to the Mumbai police alerting them about possible plane hijacks at Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai airports.
Motaparthi Vamshi Krishna was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and also under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, a senior police official said.
Krishna sent the email to Mumbai police chief in the name of a woman from Hyderabad last Saturday. It mentioned that a plane hijack was being planned at one of these airports.
The Mumbai police commissioner then informed Hyderabad police who investigated the matter and later arrested Krishna.
The Mumbai police are in process of bringing the youth to the city for further probe, the official said.
According to police, Krishna sent the email because a Chennai-based girl whom he had befriended on social media site wanted to vacation in Goa and had asked him to book her flight tickets from Chennai to Mumbai.
Krishna, who works as a transport agent, had posed as a bigshot businessman before this girl. He was short on cash and thus unable to book tickets for her, said police.
It was then that he decided to send the hoax mail to the police and then informed the girl that the Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai airports were in panic mode after a hijack threat, the police added.
