The ball-like palm size bomb exploded in front of some shops on the Apurba Sinha Path injuring one person standing there.
The bomb was not an improvised explosive device but a powerful Diwali firecracker, police said.
Journalists who visited the blast site, however, noticed splinters and small metal balls used in IEDs by militants lying scattered on the ground.
Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police A P Tiwari said the type of the explosive would be known only after investigations.
Eyewitnesses to the blast said the ball-like explosive was lying on the ground and it got triggered by a discarded burning cigarette stub.
The blast produced a loud sound and blinding light causing some of the people's hair to be singed, the witnesses claimed.
