Aiming at making the national capital free of slums, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today met Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu here and discussed on the redevelopment of JJ clusters.
The chief minister informed Naidu that his government would like to ensure a slum-free Delhi in the next five years by redeveloping slums and jhuggi-jhopri clusters and sought his cooperation in this regard.
Naidu impressed upon Kejriwal that the best way of doing so was to take full advantage of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in urban areas and explained various components of the housing mission, according to a senior Union Development Ministry official.
Naidu informed Kejriwal that under the housing mission, in-situ redevelopment is a major component under which central assistance of up to Rs one lakh is provided per each dwelling unit to be built.
Under this component, land is leveraged to mobilise private investments to redevelop slums.
The Union minister said that action plans in this regard may be formulated with reference to the cut-off date of June 1, 2014 for identifying beneficiaries as approved by the Union Cabinet last year.
Naidu also suggested to Kejriwal that officials concerned of the Delhi government can meet officials of the Ministries of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Urban Development regarding formulation of action plans right away and all necessary cooperation would be extended.
Kejriwal also briefed the minister of the intensive 'Swachh Bharat' campaign proposed to be undertaken by the Delhi government and requested him to launch the same next month for which Naidu has agreed, the official said.
