The number of camps belonging to insurgents of North Eastern region in Bangladesh has come down to 39 from over 100 five years ago due to active cooperation from the neighbouring country, a senior officer said.
"The number of camps belonging to insurgent groups from the North East taking shelter in neighbouring Bangladesh has come down to about 39," BSF Meghalaya Frontier IG Sudesh Kumar told PTI.
The number of camps of NE insurgents was over 100 five years ago, according to intelligence sources.
Kumar said the existing camps were not well-mechanized training camps but small sheds from where they operate and the list of their exact location have been given to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The primary reason for coming down of the camps was direct cooperation of the Bangladesh Government in busting these camps, information about which was shared by the BSF and other security forces, he said.
The Rapid Action Battalion and the BGB have raided and destroyed several camps since November 2013.
Meanwhile, security have beefed up ahead of the Republic Day in Shillong in view of the reported bandh declared by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council which is also running from its hideouts in Bangladesh.
Police checks has been laid in certain vulnerable areas in the city, the police said.
