A meeting of the Judicial Council recommended the name of Karki, the senior-most judge in Nepal's Supreme Court, for appointment as the next chief justice of the country.
The Judicial Council decided to forward the name of Karki to the Constitutional Council, headed by Prime Minister K P Oli, which is responsible for nominating the head of the judiciary.
Karki will take charge once President Bidhya Bhandari formally endorses her nomination.
Karki is known for her 'zero tolerance' for corruption.
Last year in October, Bhandari was elected as Nepal's first woman president.
Also last year, Nepalese lawmakers elected the country's first woman Speaker of Parliament -- UCPN-Maoist lawmaker Onsari Gharti Magar -- following formation of a new government after promulgation of the Constitution.
