Delhi airport operator DIAL has introduced a new flight management system that will reduce emissions, save fuel for airlines and improve their on-time performance.
The system, called Delhi Airport-Collaborative Decision Making (DA-CDM), has been jointly developed by the Air Traffic Control, Delhi International Airport Limited and the airlines operating from the IGI airport here.
It aims to improve air traffic flow and capacity management at airports by reducing delays, improving the predictability of events and optimising the utilisation of resources.
"The system, which was implemented on June 5, would provide common information to all stakeholders like ATC, airlines and help them in deciding exact time of a flight departure. This will bring an end to the queues of aircrafts which wait at the taxiway to get clearance from ATC for take-off," said Marcel Hungerbuehler, Chief Operating Officer of DIAL.
Besides improving on-time performance, the system would lead to saving time for the passengers as well as fuel for the airlines.
"As per calculations, even if there is a reduction of one minute in the taxiing time, it would help in saving 2,500 tonnes of precious aviation turbine fuel, which would a saving of Rs 20 crore per year. Also it would lead to saving of 7,850 tonnes of CO2 emission," Hungerbuehler said.
DIAL, along with ATC and other stakeholders, had been working for last two years on the development of the system. They all collaborated and shared data to increase overall airport efficiency, he said, adding that the IGI has become the first airport in the country to implement Collaborative Decision Making (CDM).
