When contacted by PTI, Kumar said he assumed charge of his new assignment this evening.
His term at the state-run Oriental Insurance will end in July 2020.
Prior to his current appointment, the 57-year-old insurance industry veteran was acting CMD of United India Insurance (UII).
Meanwhile, Alamelu T Lakshmanachari also took over as CMD of New Delhi-based Agriculture Insurance Company today.
Both appointments were cleared by the Centre yesterday.

Finance ministry sources said the government has already selected Nagraj Sharma, director and general manager of OIC, for the post of United India CMD.
However, the government was yet to declare Sharma's name for the post officially.
