The index resumed higher at 8,898.95 and hovered in a range of 8,914.75 and 8,867.60 before closing at 8,879.60, showing a loss of 17.10 points or 0.19 per cent.
The Nifty has dropped by 59.90 points or 0.67 per cent in two days.
Major losers were BPCL (5.32 per cent), Grasim (2.76 per cent), Coal India (2.44 per cent), NTPC (1.48 per cent) and Bajaj Auto (1.40 per cent).
However, BPCL rose 6.32 per cent, Bharti Airtel 2.66 per cent, Asian Paints 2.22 per cent, Yes Bank 2.17 per cent and Hindalco 1.99 per cent.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 27,515.84 crore from Rs 23,916.08 crore yesterday.
A total of 14,384.13 lakh shares changed hands in 8,478,366 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 11,562,210 crore.
