The NSE Nifty logged modest gains in volatile trading session and closed higher by 33 points led by mild buying in key sectors.
Overseas, European stocks were trading down and most Asian stocks ended lower as a sell-off in once much-favoured US technology shares deepened and volatility soared.
The Nifty gained by 33.20 points, or 0.33 per cent, to close at 10,245.80, before moving in a range of 10,255.35 and 10,171.05. It saw an intra-day movement of about 84.30 points.
Sector-wise, PSU rose by 1.65 per cent, private bank 1.00 per cent, media 0.95 per cent, auto 0.86 per cent, infra 0.85 per cent, energy 0.78 per cent, bank 0.75 per cent, metal 0.57 per cent, realty 0.51 per cent, pharma 0.51 per cent, energy 0.58 per cent, finance service 0.53 per cent and FMCG 0.02 per cent while IT fell by 0.72 per cent.
Major index gainers were Indiabulls Housing Finance, ICICI Bank, M&M, Bajaj Finserv, Hindustan Petroleum, IOC, Yes Bank, State Bank of India and Power Grid.
The losers included Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Hindalco, Titan, ONGC, HCL Technologies, Ultratech Cement, Eicher Motors and HDFC Bank.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market was in favour of gainers. On the NSE, 1,197 stocks advanced, 359 declined and 56 remained unchanged.
Turnover in the cash segment eased to Rs 28,252.91 crore from Rs 26,681.61 crore as Monday. A total of 14,856.09 lakh shares changed hands in 1,02,21,041 trades.
