Though small broad-based buying contributed in today's gains, sentiment was generally muted due to year-end amid absence of big institutional investors participation.
Meanwhile, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 128.90 crore yesterday as per the provisional data.
The 50-share Nifty traded between a high of 6,317.30 and a low of 6,287.30, before closing at 6,304.00, showing a nominal gain of 12.90 points, or 0.21 per cent.
The major gainers were IDFC, JP Associates, Tata Power, Ultracemco, HCL Tech, Wipro, ACC, Axis Bank, TCS and PowerGrid, while BHEL and Maruti witnessed profit-booking.
