Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) would not agree to amend Nepal's new Constitution under pressure from any external force, former prime minister and party chairman K P Sharma Oli said on Monday.

"Though Constitution is a dynamic document and can be amended according to needs of the time, why do we need it now?" Oli said talking to reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on his return from Thailand.

"The CPN-UML would not agree to amend the Constitution under pressure of any external force," Oli said without naming any country.

In the past, Oli has alleged that India was behind the months-long agitation by Madhesis demanding amendments to the Constitution including redrawing of the country's federal provinces.

He said the amendment to the Constitution should not be done against democracy and national interests, adding the statute could not be amended just to fulfill vested interests of some political groups.

At this time, both the government and the agitating parties did not have any concrete logic behind their agenda for the Constitution amendment, he said.

Oli had resigned in July, bringing an abrupt end to his nine-month-old government that struggled with the task of post-earthquake reconstruction and crippling protests by the Madhesis.
