Himachal Pradesh police chief today said no girl from any part of Sirmaur district have been enticed to marry old or young men from neighbouring Haryana for money.
Reacting to a media report on the issue, Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar said "No particular trend of kidnapping or abduction of girls has been witnessed from any part of Sirmaur district, adjoining Haryana and Uttarakhand, during past five years and also the reports of girls from the area being married to old people for money had not been established."
There were reports that Himachali girls, particularly from Shillai and Trans-Giri areas of Sirmaur district were being enticed into marriage with young and old men of Haryana for money.
He said that the reports were based on a survey, conducted bySub Divisional Magistrate Shillai, Vikas Shukla, clearly stated that as many as 509 girls were married to grooms in other states including Haryana during past 25 years.
The DGP said all six girls of Timbi village, married outside the state have returned to their homes.
"Five due to marital discord while another due to death of her husband. The survey report clearly mentioned that there was no information about trafficking of girls and also no clue that they were married due to poverty or illiteracy in the area or for money," he said.
The fact that these girls were allegedly handed over to old, mentally disturbed, physically handicapped or divorced persons had also not been established and ananalysis of the figures show that on an average, marriages of 20 girls from Shillai area were solomnised with grooms in other states, which is not an alarming figure, the DGP said.
Giving details, Kumar said in six years (between 2011 and 2016) 25 cases pertaining to 28 victims were registered, and except one, the victims in all the cases have been traced.
He said one case was registered in January at Paonta police station, in which two girls were allegedly sold by their brother for Rs 50,000. Both the girls were rescued and all six accused arrested and Rs 50,000 was also recovered and challan had already filed in the court.
