No leniency should be shown to those involved in narcotics business which should be dealt with firm hands, a Delhi court observed as it sent two convicts to prison for 12 and six years.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajiv Mehra refused to take a lenient view towards two Delhi residents, Belraj Sheikh and Gulsher, from whom police had recovered 2.2 kg smack.
"It may be observed that drug addiction is an enigma to the society. No leniency is required to be shown to the persons involved in drug business. It is paralysing the society as a whole. It is a social menace which needs to be dealt with firm hands," the court said.
The court awarded 12 years rigorous imprisonment to Belraj Sheikh from whom the police had recovered two kgs of smack and imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on him.
It also awarded six years jail to Gulsher for possessing 200 gms of smack and imposed a fine Rs one lakh on him.
The court said the conduct of the duo in absence of any contradiction coming on record with regard to testimony of witnesses, was sufficient to prove the conspiracy between them.
It also said two kilogram of smack which was recovered on the disclosure statement of Sheikh was proved by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
According to the police, crime branch while acting on a tip-off had laid a trap near Kamla Market in Central Delhi on May 25 last year and apprehended Sheikh and Gulsher.
On checking, 200 gram of smack was recovered from them and later on the disclosure statement of Sheikh, another two kilogrammes of smack was recovered from his house.
During trial, the two men had claimed they were falsely implicated in the case.
