There is no proposal to extend social security benefits like EPF, ESIC, gratuity and pension facilities to all unorganised sector workers, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Replying to a question, Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said there is no proposal to extend social security benefits like EPF, ESIC, gratuity and pension facilities to all unorganised sector workers.
Underlining that the government has enacted the Unorganised Sector Social Security Act, 2008 with a view to provide social social security measures to all unorganised workers, he said that the government has already taken various steps to provide social security for the unorganised workers.
The government has enacted the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 1996 and the Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Cess Act, 1996 with a view of regulating the employment and conditions of service of these workers and to provide for their safety, health and welfare measures.
It may be recalled that 93 per cent of the work force in the country are employed in the unorganised sector.
